Gassi tracking: record your dog walk

With DOGSY's Gassi tracking you record every walk with your dog – route, distance, duration and pace via GPS. Build streaks, review your weeks and compare yourself with others if you like. Here you'll learn how it works and where recording runs most reliably.

What is Gassi tracking?

With Gassi tracking you record your walk with the dog: the route appears live on the map, along with distance, duration and your pace. Every walk is saved – so you can see across days, weeks and months how much you're out and about. Recording runs most reliably in the DOGSY app; the browser works too, but with limits (more on that below).

What you record

Route on the map

Your route draws itself live on the map as you walk. At the end you see the whole path and the distance covered.

Duration & pace

DOGSY measures duration and pace (min/km) too. If a stretch was faster than running pace, the app points it out – in case you were on a bike or in a car in between.

Streaks

Every Gassi day counts: DOGSY tracks your current and your longest streak – a little nudge to get out every day.

Summaries

Distance, duration and number of walks – added up for today, this week, this month and this year.

Gassi leaderboard

If you like, compare yourself with the most active walkers near you – voluntary, and without ever showing your route.

Share a walk

Send a finished walk to a chat contact – or share your location live during the walk, until the walk is over.

How it works – step by step

From your first walk to your history: this is how a Gassi walk with DOGSY goes.

  1. Open Gassi and start

The «Gassi» section opens with your totals for the day, week, month and year. Tap «Start a walk» – then pick which dog you're out with.

  2. Allow location

The first time, DOGSY asks for access to your location. You are only located during the walk itself, never afterwards.

  3. Set off – the map draws along

Your route grows live on the map, with distance, duration and pace running along. In the DOGSY app your phone can go in your pocket; in the browser the page has to stay open and visible.

  4. When someone should follow along

You can share your location live for this walk with someone from your chats. They see only your current position on a map – not the route you walked – and sharing ends as soon as you finish the walk, after two hours at the latest.

  5. Finish, save, find again

At the end you save the walk. It lands under «My walks» with map, distance, duration and pace – private, just for you. There you can rename it, walk the route again or navigate to the starting point.

What is it good for?

Three everyday situations where Gassi tracking helps:

The evening walk on your own

It's dark and you're heading out alone? Share your location for this walk with someone you trust from your chats. They see on a map where you are right now – and sharing stops by itself as soon as you finish the walk.

When someone asks how much you're out

At the vet's, at dog training or simply for yourself: your history lists every walk with date, distance and duration, plus the totals for the day, week, month and year. No guessing needed.

Finding that good route again

Found a route that fits perfectly? You'll find it again in your history, can navigate to the starting point and walk it once more. And if you like, make it public – then others find it under «Discover routes».

All of this is part of the free DOGSY account.

App or browser – where does recording run?

Gassi tracking is available in the DOGSY app and in the browser. It runs most reliably in the app: there DOGSY keeps recording even when you lock the screen or switch apps. In the browser, recording only runs while the page stays open and visible.

In the DOGSY app

Your phone can go in your pocket: the app keeps recording even with the screen locked. While it runs you'll see a notification – one tap brings you back. You are only located during the walk, never afterwards, and you can stop any time. This is the recommended way.

In the browser

You can record a walk in the browser too – but only while this page stays open and visible. Lock the screen or switch tabs and the track breaks off. For longer walks the app is the safe way.

The Gassi leaderboard

If you like, join the Gassi leaderboard and compare yourself with the most active walkers nearby or across the whole country – by distance, duration or number of walks, for day, week, month or year. Taking part is voluntary: only your display name, your home town and your totals are shown – never your route or your location. Only people who take part can see the leaderboard, and you can opt out at any time.

Your routes stay private

Every recorded walk is yours alone: nobody but you sees the route and the map. If you want to show a walk, that's your active choice – you can send a finished route to a single chat contact or share your location live while you walk. Both can be revoked at any time, and the leaderboard never shows a path anyway.

Frequently asked questions about Gassi tracking

Does DOGSY keep recording when the screen is off?

In the DOGSY app, yes: you start the recording deliberately, and after that your phone can go in your pocket. A notification shows the whole time that recording is running, and you can stop any time. In the browser it doesn't work – there recording only runs while the page stays open and visible.

What do I need to get started?

A free DOGSY account and a device with location (GPS). The DOGSY app is best; the browser works for short walks too.

Can others see my route?

No, your routes are private. Only you see them – unless you deliberately send a walk to a chat contact or share your location live. Both can be revoked at any time.

How exactly does the leaderboard work?

Voluntary and aggregated: after you join, other participants see your display name, your home town and your totals (distance, duration, count) – never your route or position. You can opt out at any time.

Can I link a walk to my dog?

Yes. When you start, you choose which dog you're out with – and you can rename any walk later.

Does Gassi tracking cost anything?

No. Gassi tracking, like DOGSY as a whole, is free.
