Too excited to learn

A dog that's completely wound up can't learn anything — and neither can a bored one. Here's how to find the sweet spot for your training.

Maybe you know the feeling: your dog is so wound up that they don't even notice you any more. In a moment like that, they can hardly learn anything. To learn, your dog needs just the right amount of excitement — not too little and not too much.

The sweet spot

A little excitement helps: it wakes your dog up and keeps them motivated. But when it gets too much, they can no longer think clearly, and nothing works at all. For trickier exercises especially, a calm, middle state is ideal.
