Getting your dog used to new things

Vacuum cleaner, city or brush: in small steps, your dog learns that new things are harmless. Here's how to go about it the right way.

A relaxed dog has learned that many everyday things are simply part of life: the vacuum cleaner, traffic, the brush. This kind of familiarity develops on its own when your dog experiences something often enough without anything bad happening. You can help him along if you go about it the right way.

Start small

If something might be unpleasant for your dog, start with a mild version: a loud noise first quietly and from a distance, a busy place first at a quiet time. Only when your dog stays relaxed do you take the next step. That way he learns at his own pace that nothing happens.
