When your dog is afraid of people

Strangers scare your dog? With distance, patience and good experiences you can help him become more relaxed.

Some dogs are afraid of people they don't know. That can come from bad experiences – or from meeting too few different people as a puppy. Sometimes it's just one feature the dog can't make sense of: a hat, a walking stick, a limping gait. The good news: with patience, a lot can improve.

Distance gives security

Never force your dog close to people he's afraid of. Keep enough distance so he can watch while staying relaxed, and reward him for looking on calmly. From a safe distance he learns best that strangers pose no danger.
