Summary
Microchip required for all dogs, with register
The rule
Throughout Austria: every dog must be microchipped by a veterinarian at the owner's expense, puppies at the latest at three months of age and in any case before they are first passed on (§ 24a Abs. 3 TSchG). Within one month of chipping, entry into Austria or taking over the dog, it must be registered in the federal pet database (Heimtierdatenbank) – by the owners themselves via the portal, via the authority or by the veterinarian (§ 24a Abs. 4 TSchG). The K-LSiG contains no reporting requirement of its own; for the dog levy, however, the dog must be reported to the municipal office within one month and must wear a dog tag outside the house (§§ 9 and 10 K-HAG).
