Summary

Microchip required for all dogs, with register

The rule

Throughout Austria: every dog must be microchipped by a veterinarian at the owner's expense, puppies at the latest at three months of age and in any case before they are first passed on (§ 24a Abs. 3 TSchG). Within one month of chipping, entry into Austria or taking over the dog, it must be registered in the federal pet database (Heimtierdatenbank) – by the owners themselves via the portal, via the authority or by the veterinarian (§ 24a Abs. 4 TSchG). In Tyrol, a dog older than three months must be reported to the authority – that is the mayor – within one week, with the number of the microchip; the authority keeps a register of the dogs kept (§ 6a Abs. 8 lit. a, § 6b, § 23 Abs. 1 Landes-Polizeigesetz).
