The rule
Every dog owner must take out and maintain liability insurance for the dog at the latest three months after its birth, covering at least one million euros for personal injury and property damage and € 50,000 for other financial losses (§ 2 Abs. 3); public-law bodies are exempt. The requirement applies to dogs born since 1 March 2009 and to dangerous dogs (§ 20).
