Not every reward has the same effect. How to find out what really motivates your dog – and why quality matters more than quantity.

Reward is the engine of good training. But what's the greatest thing for one dog leaves another cold. It's worth finding out what really motivates your dog, because only an appealing reward actually works.

More than just food

Food is an obvious reward, because almost every dog likes it and it can be dosed well. But a game, snuffling together or a favourite activity can reward too. If your dog is just then doing something it especially enjoys, you can use exactly that as a reward: first comes the exercise, then it may do the nice thing.
