When the puppy nips hands and trousers

Does your puppy bite hands and clothing during play? That's normal dog behaviour. How to teach it gently to be softer.

In its first weeks, your puppy played wildly with its siblings, with barking, nipping and pawing. At your home it simply carries on, only now the little teeth land on hands and trouser legs. That's completely normal puppy behaviour and no ill will, but you may gently show it that things go differently with people.

Redirect instead of forbidding

Bans alone do little with a puppy, because it still lacks the necessary self-control. Redirecting is far more effective: if your puppy makes to nip your hand, give it a toy instead. That way you channel its need onto a suitable object rather than just scolding.
