Timing: rewarding at the right moment

One second decides what your dog learns. Why the right timing when rewarding is so important and how to get it right.

In training, a single second often decides. Your dog links the reward with what it did in the moment just before. If it comes too late, you may already be praising the wrong thing. Good timing is therefore the key to clear learning.

Why the moment counts

If you reward your dog for sitting but it stands up again just then, it learns: standing up brings the treat. That's how you unintentionally create exactly the things you didn't want. The faster and more precisely the reward follows the desired behaviour, the more clearly your dog understands what it's about.
