Neutering: a decision to be made with care
To neuter or not – and when? This question deserves more than a quick answer. Why age and breed play a role.
Whether and when a dog should be neutered is not a decision to make in passing. It's often made routinely in the first year of life, but it's worth weighing it up well-informed and at leisure. Because the procedure has more effects than many people realise.
Age and breed count
Studies show that very early neutering can, in some breeds, especially larger ones, be associated with a higher risk of certain joint and cancer conditions. In small breeds things often look different. So the right timing, and the question of whether at all, depend strongly on the individual dog.
