Understanding the marker signal and clicker

Click and treat: a marker signal tells your dog precisely what was right. How it works and how to build it up.

A marker signal is like a photo of the right moment. It tells your dog exactly: that just then was it, and for that the reward is now coming. A clicker or a short, always identical word serves as the signal. With fine movements in particular, your dog learns amazingly quickly with it.

How to build it up

First the signal has to acquire meaning. To do this, you give the signal many times in a row and let a treat follow immediately: click, food. Click, food. After a few repetitions your dog has understood that the click always announces something good. Only then do you use it in training.
