Recognising pain: the quiet signs
Dogs by no means always limp when something hurts. These quiet signs tell you that your dog might be in pain.
Dogs are masters at hiding pain. Often they don't limp and don't yelp, but only show subtle changes. Slowly increasing or chronic pain in particular is therefore easily overlooked and dismissed as a bad mood or old age. Anyone who knows the quiet signs can help sooner.
The pain face
Pay attention to the facial expression. Narrowed eyes, tense facial muscles, a pinched or withdrawn expression and ears held low or drawn back can point to pain. Sometimes the face overall seems smaller and more pointed than usual.
