When your dog hears less well

Failing hearing comes on gradually. How to recognise it and how to keep communicating well with your dog using visual and touch signals.

When hearing fades, it usually happens slowly. Many dogs compensate for it for a long time, so it's only noticed late. You notice it, for example, from your dog sleeping more deeply, no longer reacting to being spoken to but reacting to vibrations or loud sounds, or turning the wrong way when called.

Not disobedience

If your dog no longer reacts as it used to, that's often not stubbornness but simply poorer hearing. Even if it searches for you anxiously around the home, that need not be confusion; it can be because it can no longer hear you. First have it checked at the vet's practice whether anything can be treated.
