Over the years the metabolism slows down, and older dogs feel the cold sooner than young ones. Feeling cold is more than just unpleasant: it means stress, makes a dog more prone to infections and often leads to tension in the muscles, especially in the back.
A simple rule of thumb
As a guide: if your dog is over ten years old and it's below ten degrees or raining, a coat may go on. In real cold you can combine a warming suit underneath. What's important is that the clothing warms without restricting movement, especially at the front legs.
