The rule

The municipalities impose the dog levy by ordinance of the municipal council on the basis of the federal authorisation; the Dog Levy Act applies to these municipalities (§ 1 Abs. 1). The municipal council sets the amount: for working dogs € 7.20 to € 14.50, for other dogs at least € 14.50 per year (§ 2 Abs. 1). It is payable annually in January; a new dog must be registered with the municipal office within two weeks (§ 5 Abs. 1, § 6 Abs. 1). Every dog subject to the levy must wear the municipality's dog tag on a collar or chest harness (§ 9). Amount per municipality, see the city page.
