How long can a dog be left alone?
Recommendations by age, training in small steps – and what helps against boredom.
An adult dog that has learnt to be on its own will usually stay relaxed for four to six hours alone. Puppies, adolescent dogs and seniors manage considerably less. Dogs are social animals – Swiss animal welfare legislation, too, requires sufficient daily contact with people; permanent isolation is not an option.
Being left alone is training, not a fixed state: build up the absences in tiny steps – first seconds behind the closed door, then minutes, then longer. Keep your departures and returns low-key so they don't turn into a drama. A camera will honestly show you whether your dog really stays relaxed or is quietly suffering.
Activity comes before being left alone, and rest comes after: a dog that has been for a walk and worked its mind beforehand usually sleeps through the time. Chews, stuffed Kongs or a snuffle mat also help against boredom – whining, barking or destroying things, by contrast, are warning signs of stress that make professional help worthwhile.
