Barking, drooling, refusing to get in: car travel stresses many dogs. Here's how to get your dog used to it patiently and in small steps.
For many people, driving is part of everyday life, but not every dog likes getting in. Some refuse to get in, others show stress by barking, drooling, trembling or vomiting. Puppies and rescue dogs in particular are often unsettled because they've had bad experiences with earlier transports. With patience this can be changed.
Securing comes first
Your dog must be secured in the car so it doesn't distract you and is protected in the event of braking. Options are a special safety belt, a dog guard in the boot or a well-fastened crate. Make sure there's enough air and that your dog is neither cramped nor sliding back and forth on every bend.
