The dog crate as a retreat

A crate can be a cosy retreat – but in Switzerland only without a door. What's allowed and how to get your dog used to it positively.

A dog crate can serve two purposes: as a safe means of transport in the car and as a cosy retreat in the house. For it to become a place of well-being, it needs positive habituation and the right handling.

Important for Switzerland

Be sure to observe the legal requirement: in Switzerland, dogs may not be shut into transport crates. As a retreat in the house, a crate is only permitted if the door grille is permanently removed, so the door stays open. A crate is not meant for shutting a dog in. That way it stays a voluntary, safe place and never becomes a compulsion.
